Recognition of Sgt. John Byrd,
Harris County Sheriff’s Office
For his Dedication to Emergency Communications

Sgt John Byrd of the Harris County Sheriff's Office retires May 30, 2013. The GHC 9-1-1 Board of Managers recognized Sgt. John Byrd for his dedication to emergency communications at its meeting on May 22, 2013. Sgt. Byrd has spent the majority of his career working with the emergency communications division, as a technical liaison with GHC, and supporting the PSAP and the mobile command post.

He was instrumental in working with GHC 9-1-1 on the construction of the mobile 9-1-1 PSAP, built in 2006, for contingency activations—it was one of the first of its kind. Sgt. Byrd coordinated the use of the mobile command PSAP during various contingency events, including 1) its use for 72 days by Seabrook Police Department following Hurricane Ike, and 2) assisting NASA NASA and other federal agencies following the space shuttle Columbia explosion in February, 2003.

Sgt. Byrd has worked for continuous improvement in all aspects of the County's emergency communications capabilities--including assisting GHC 9-1-1 with upgrades and enhancements over the years to the Harris County 9-1-1 PSAP, the second largest in the GHC 9-1-1 territory and the fourth largest in the country.
The staff at GHC 9-1-1 is grateful for his attention to detail and his dedication to emergency communications. We wish him well with his retirement and future endeavors.
