Telecommunicator of the Year Winner:
Daneille Grunden

League City Police Department

The Commission on State Emergency Communications recognized Daneille Grunden for exceptional handling of a 9-1-1 call while working as a Telecommunicator for League City Police Department. September 5, 2010 started as a beautiful sunny morning. On this Sunday morning, 9‐1‐1 Telecommunicator, Daneille Grunden answered a wireless call from a male caller who had sustained a serious head injury and advised that there had been a boating accident, and that a women and her 9 year-old child were ejected into some trees approximately 20 to 50 feet from the water. The male was still in the water and was bleeding from the head; he was disoriented and did not know where he was on the lake. This posed some major obstacles;

Clear Lake is a large recreational water area, covering a vast amount of space with several individual channels that border numerous surrounding cities. Additionally, trees line the majority of the lake. Daneille kept asking questions regarding his location and heard the injured female in the background yelling that they were near the nature preserve. Daneille immediately dispatched EMS and Fire personnel to the area of the city that has a boat ramp nearest to the nature preserve. Still unable to get a location, Daneille used the X & Y coordinates with no luck; it was displaying a location on land several miles away and unfortunately there was not a GPS system on the boat. Patrol officers were also sent to try to locate the boat from the shore area. The Coast Guard was contacted, as well as neighboring agencies to launch their boat in the water for search and rescue. Daneille lost contact with the caller several times and continuously had to re‐established contact and obtain new information, such as the color of the boat and their injuries. Sixteen minutes after the initial call was received, the caller’s boat was located. It took several additional minutes to locate the ejected female and nine year- old boy. Once they were located, emergency personnel requested Life Flight for all of the patients. Daneille immediately contacted life flight and coordinated all responses between EMS and Fire Personnel. Daneille’s handling of this call was exemplary in every aspect. Throughout this entire emergency, she remained calm and showed compassion to the caller.  Her active listening skills along with her critical thinking skills were crucial to the rescue of all three person’s and aided in the reduction of loss of life. Daneille’s exemplary performance is deserving of recognition at a state level.
